ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok vs ByteDance Doubao: Which AI Should You Use in 2027?
Short answer: ChatGPT is the best all-rounder, Claude is strongest for long documents, writing and coding, Gemini wins inside Google Workspace and Android, Grok is built for real-time X news, and ByteDance Doubao leads in China and in cheap image and video work. Most teams should run two, not one.
Quick answers
Checked on November 4, 2026. AI products change monthly, so I date every claim and link the source. User numbers are company-reported or third-party estimates, and each company counts users differently.
Which AI is best overall in 2027?
ChatGPT is the best default for most people. It does the widest range of jobs well, from writing and analysis to images, voice and file work, and it has the largest user base. If you only pay for one assistant, start there and add a second for the work it does less well.
Which AI is best for writing and long documents?
Claude. It holds a consistent voice across long drafts, follows detailed style rules and handles very long inputs. Anthropic's newest flagship, Opus 5.5, ships with a context window of about one million tokens, so a full contract pack or a year of meeting notes fits in one conversation.
Which AI is best for coding?
Claude first, ChatGPT a close second. Both now run as coding agents that read a repository, edit files and run tests. I would trial both on your own codebase for a week, because results depend heavily on your stack.
Which AI is best if my company runs on Google?
Gemini. It sits inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet and Android, so it can work with files you already have without exporting anything. That integration matters more than small differences in model quality.
Which AI is best for real-time news and trends?
Grok. It reads posts on X as they happen, which makes it the fastest way to see what people are saying about a breaking story, a product launch or a competitor. Verify anything important against a primary source before you act on it.
What is ByteDance Doubao and should I use it?
Doubao is ByteDance's AI assistant and the most used chatbot in China. Use it if you sell into the Chinese market or need very low-cost image and video generation. Outside China it is harder to access, and the international app is a separate product.
Which AI is best for free?
Gemini and ChatGPT have the most generous free tiers. Gemini's free plan comes with any Google account, and ChatGPT's free and low-cost Go plans cover everyday tasks, with ads on some tiers. Claude's free plan is good but hits limits sooner on long work.
Should a business use one AI or several?
Two, usually. Pick one general assistant for the whole team and one specialist for the work that matters most to revenue. A common pairing is ChatGPT or Gemini for everyone, plus Claude for writing, contracts and code.
The five assistants at a glance
| Assistant | Company | Best at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI | All-round work, images, voice, the widest tool ecosystem | Ads on free and Go tiers; the model picker changes often |
| Claude | Anthropic | Long documents, careful writing, coding agents | No image generation; tighter free limits |
| Gemini | Google Workspace, Android, search-grounded answers, video understanding | Best value only if you already live in Google | |
| Grok | xAI | Real-time X posts, trend tracking, a looser conversational style | Social posts are not facts; check claims before using them |
| Doubao | ByteDance | Chinese language and market, low-cost image and video generation | Mainland app needs a Chinese phone number; data stays under Chinese law |
What changed going into 2027
- ChatGPT passed one billion weekly users. OpenAI had reported about 900 million weekly users in February 2026, and coverage of the GPT-5.6 rollout reported that ChatGPT topped one billion weekly users in August 2026. OpenAI also began selling ads inside ChatGPT this year.
- Gemini crossed one billion monthly users. Google announced on August 11, 2026 that the Gemini app passed one billion monthly active users, and Gemini 3.5 Flash became generally available in May.
- Claude got a new flagship. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, 2026, aimed at long-running agents, coding and professional work, with a one million token context window.
- Grok kept shipping point releases. Grok 4.7 was reported released on September 21, 2026, first through developer channels. Grok 5 had still not shipped by early November, according to public tracking of the Grok line.
- Doubao kept its lead in China. QuestMobile data reported by China Business Insider put Doubao at about 345 million monthly users in Q1 2026, more than double the next Chinese assistant.

Book a Strategy Call →How I compare AI assistants for clients
I do not pick tools from leaderboards. Benchmarks move every few weeks and rarely match the work a sales team or a clinic actually does. Instead I run the same five jobs through each assistant using the client's own material: one email reply, one long document summary, one data question from a spreadsheet, one research question that needs sources, and one task in the tools they already use.
Then I score three things. Did the answer need editing before it could go out? Could the assistant reach the files and systems where the work lives? And what does it cost per person once the whole team is on it? The model that wins a benchmark often loses on the second question.
Best AI by use case, with real examples
Best AI for writing emails, posts and sales copy: Claude or ChatGPT
Example: a real estate agent pastes ten past listings and asks for a new listing description in the same tone, plus three social captions. Claude tends to keep the agent's voice with fewer edits. ChatGPT is faster to iterate with and can produce the matching image in the same chat. This matters because writing listings is already the most common AI task for agents: NAR's 2026 technology survey found 75% of agents who use AI use it for listing descriptions.
Best AI for long documents and contracts: Claude
Example: an immigration consultancy uploads a 200-page policy update and its own intake checklist, then asks which checklist questions are now out of date. A long context window means the whole document stays in view, so the answer cites the actual sections. I still have a licensed professional sign off on anything that reaches a client.
Best AI for coding and building tools: Claude, then ChatGPT
Example: a SaaS founder asks an agent to add a billing webhook, write the tests and open a pull request. Claude and ChatGPT both handle this as an agent working in the repository. Gemini is strong when the code runs on Google Cloud. For a small team, the deciding factor is usually which one your developers already trust.
Best AI for research with sources: ChatGPT or Gemini
Example: a marketing lead asks for the five most cited studies on zero-click search, with links. Both ChatGPT search and Gemini, grounded in Google Search, return linked sources. Always open the links. An answer with citations is easier to check, not automatically correct.
Best AI for teams on Google Workspace: Gemini
Example: a clinic manager asks Gemini in Gmail to find every unanswered booking enquiry from last week and draft replies, then asks Gemini in Sheets to total no-shows by treatment. No exporting, no copying between tools. For a team already paying for Workspace, this is the cheapest serious AI upgrade available.
Best AI for real-time news and social listening: Grok
Example: a brand manager asks Grok what people on X are saying about a competitor's price change in the last six hours. Grok can read that stream directly, which the others cannot do as well. Treat the output as a list of leads to check, because posts are opinions and rumours as often as facts.
Best AI for images and video: ChatGPT, Gemini, or Doubao for volume
Example: a medspa needs twenty social visuals a month. ChatGPT and Gemini both generate strong images from plain instructions. ByteDance's tools, including the Seedance video models behind Doubao and CapCut, are built for short-form video at low cost, which suits teams producing high volumes of TikTok-style content. Claude does not generate images.
Best AI for the Chinese market: Doubao
Example: an exporter preparing product pages for Chinese buyers uses Doubao to check phrasing, search Chinese-language sources and draft Douyin captions. Inside China, Doubao is the default assistant, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are not officially available there. Outside China, ByteDance offers a separate international app, Dola, formerly Cici, which reportedly does not run on the same Seed models.
Best AI for customer-facing chat and voice agents: depends on the build
Example: a brokerage wants a WhatsApp agent that qualifies leads and books viewings. Here the consumer app matters less than the model behind it, the CRM connection and the hand-off rules. I usually choose the model per task, a fast low-cost model for routing and a stronger one for complex replies, and I design the system around the CRM. See how I approach AI chat agents and AI voice agents.
ChatGPT vs Claude
Choose ChatGPT if you want one tool for everything: writing, images, voice conversations, quick analysis and a large library of custom GPTs and integrations. Choose Claude if your work is mostly long, careful writing, document review or software. Many professionals pay for both, and the combined cost is still less than one hour of a consultant's time a month.
ChatGPT vs Gemini
The difference is less about intelligence than about where your work lives. If your files, email and calendar are in Google, Gemini saves real time every day. If your team uses Microsoft 365 or a mix of tools, ChatGPT is usually the smoother general assistant. Gemini also has a long lead on understanding video, which helps anyone who reviews recorded calls or YouTube content.
Grok vs ChatGPT
Grok is the better tool for what is happening right now on X. ChatGPT is the better tool for nearly everything else. Grok is also looser in tone and willing to engage with edgier prompts, which some users like and most brand teams should manage carefully.
Doubao vs ChatGPT
For Chinese-language work and the Chinese market, Doubao is the practical choice and is deeply connected to ByteDance's apps such as Douyin. For English-language business work outside China, ChatGPT is easier to buy, easier to govern and better supported. Before putting client data into any assistant, check where it is stored and which country's law applies.
Claude vs Gemini
Claude is my pick for depth on a single hard task, such as rewriting a proposal or refactoring code. Gemini is my pick for breadth across a Google-based company, such as summarising every thread about one client across Gmail, Drive and Meet notes.
What each one costs
All five have free access in some form. Paid individual plans for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and SuperGrok cluster around 20 to 30 US dollars a month, with higher tiers for heavy users and separate business plans with admin controls and data protections. ChatGPT also offers a cheaper Go plan that can include ads. Prices change often and vary by country, so check each company's pricing page on the day you buy, and budget per seat for the whole team rather than for one power user.
How to choose in 30 minutes
- List your top three AI jobs by time spent, for example replying to enquiries, writing proposals and reporting.
- Run the same real example of each job through two or three assistants. Use material you would genuinely send.
- Count the edits needed before each answer is usable. Fewer edits beats a better benchmark score.
- Check access: can it reach your email, files and CRM, or will people copy and paste all day?
- Check data terms on the business plan: training opt-out, retention and where data is stored.
- Pick one general assistant and one specialist, and review the choice every six months.
My recommendation
For most small and mid-size businesses I recommend a two-tool setup: ChatGPT or Gemini for the whole team, depending on whether you run on Google, and Claude for the people who write, review contracts or build software. Add Grok only if real-time social monitoring matters to your market, and Doubao only if you sell into China.
The bigger gain rarely comes from switching assistants. It comes from connecting one of them to your CRM, inbox and booking system so the work moves without copy and paste. That is the work I do in AI automation and CRM consulting. If you want a second opinion on your setup, try the lead value calculator first, then book a strategy call.
Questions people ask me
Which AI is best overall in 2027?
ChatGPT is the best default for most people because it handles the widest range of tasks, from writing and analysis to images and voice, and has the largest user base. Most teams get more value by pairing it with one specialist, such as Claude for writing and code or Gemini for Google Workspace.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
For long documents, consistent writing style and coding agents, many professionals prefer Claude. For all-round use, images, voice and integrations, ChatGPT is broader. The best test is to run the same real task through both and count how many edits each answer needs before you can use it.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
Gemini is better if your work lives in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Drive, because it can act on those files directly. ChatGPT is usually the smoother general assistant for teams on Microsoft 365 or mixed tools. Google reported the Gemini app passed one billion monthly users in August 2026.
What is Grok best for?
Grok is best for real-time questions about what people are posting on X, such as reactions to news, launches or competitors. It is a fast listening tool, but social posts include rumours and opinion, so verify anything important against a primary source before acting on it.
What is ByteDance Doubao?
Doubao is the AI assistant made by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok and Douyin. It is the most used chatbot in China, powered by ByteDance Seed models, and strong at Chinese-language work and low-cost image and video generation. The mainland app usually needs a Chinese phone number.
Can I use Doubao outside China?
The mainland Doubao app is built for users in China. ByteDance runs a separate international app called Dola, previously Cici, in selected markets, and it is reported to run on different models. Check availability in your country and review the data terms before using either for business information.
Which AI is best for coding?
Claude and ChatGPT are the strongest coding agents for most teams, able to read a repository, edit files and run tests. Gemini is a good choice for projects on Google Cloud. Trial two of them on your own codebase for a week, because results depend heavily on your language and stack.
Which AI is best for small businesses?
Start with ChatGPT or Gemini for the whole team, depending on whether you run on Google, then add Claude for writing, proposals or software. The largest gains usually come from connecting the assistant to your CRM, inbox and booking system rather than from switching between assistants.
